What Is Rosacea?

Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory condition of the skin that is characterized by persistent redness and flushing that primarily is present in the center of the face. It is a condition that can not be cured, but it can be managed. If left untreated it can lead to papules, bumps, skin thickening and extreme sensitivity.

How Does A Person Get Rosacea?

The cause of this condition is still unknown, but studies have shown there is a possible link between neurovascular and immune system dysregulation. Studies have also shown that people who struggle with rosacea also present with a higher concentration of demodex mites (which are already present on our skin). Genetics may also play a role in rosacea diagnoses. Women are at a higher risk of developing rosacea and it occurs more frequently in fair skin tones, but it can also effect those with darker skin tones.

What Are The Symptoms? Here are some signs to look out for:

  • Persistent redness and flushing

  • Small solid red bumps or pus-filled pimples

  • Visible blood vessels

  • Burning, itching and sensitivity

  • Dryness

Some symptoms may extend beyond the face and even enter the eye area (known as occular rosacea). If left untreated one may develop loss of vision and corneal damage.

How Is It Treated?

Each person is different and requires a customized approach that is appropriate for their case. If you feel like you are suffering from rosacea, it is important you visit your medical provider or a dermatologist for a formal diagnosis and possible prescription medications. Lifestyle adjustments may also be required to determine internal factors that may play a role in your flare-ups. Again, rosacea is not a condition that can be cured, but the symptoms can be managed. You may even go through a period of remission, but it can return.

Where Do I (Your Esthetician) Fit In To The Equation?

My job is ensure your skin care routine is appropriate for you and to provide you support! Your routine needs a gentle approach and protection. Oftentimes, (through some detective work) we find that flareups can occur through chronic stress, environmental factors, inflammatory foods, and other conditions. My jobs is to go over that information with you and give you a relaxing service to help calm your nervous system and use soothing ingredients to strengthen and fortify your barrier.
